Meet MHS Alumna and LEF Scholarship Recipient: Brigit Reese

Brigit Reese, Marcus High School, Class of 2020

Brigit Reese, a 2020 graduate of Marcus High School and recipient of the Heritage Flying Hawks Senior Scholarship, has made it her goal in college to develop into a profound speaker, strong writer and an engaged community member.

Even though she has only been a student at Southwestern University for one semester, she is already well on her way to achieving this goal.

“I joined an organization called Mosaic Meetups, which connects first-year students focusing on engaging students with the community, reflecting on past experiences, and articulating those experiences to others,” says Reese. “I’ve met some great fellow students, and I’ve had the opportunity to explore my role as a student and a member of the communities that I engage with.”

Interested in becoming a Sociology major with a minor in French or Race and Ethnic Studies, Reese is eager to explore different paths to fully round out her education.

“My favorite part of the college is the focused classes,” she says. “Southwestern University requires a diversified academic experience taking from elements of the liberal arts and the natural sciences. I am currently taking a discussion-based sociology class that has piqued my interest in studying societies.”

Starting college in a pandemic has put a major twist on the traditional college experience but Reese has found the silver lining and uses it as an opportunity to explore her new home’s natural scenery.

Goodbye Marauders, Hello Pirates!

“I’ve enjoyed being on such a beautiful campus. Due to the pandemic, many activities are limited, but the Georgetown area is home to beautiful scenery and many parks,” she says. “I’ve enjoyed having socially distanced picnics under the fall leaves.”

Reese joins her older sister, Jillian at her new school, who is also a previous LEF Scholarship recipient. Both sisters are strong examples of the dedication and hard-work LEF strives to support in the next chapter of their education.

“The LEF scholarship provided me with the needed funds to pay for the extra expenses of colleges, such as textbooks,” says Brigit. “The net price indicated by a college does not account for some of the additional expenses needed, so my LEF scholarship helped me cover those expenses.”
