Farmers Harvest, the student newspaper of Lewisville High School, is a top-notch publication. The journalism team at LHS provides great instruction, and it isn’t uncommon for student journalists to win awards for their work on the paper. But with the rapidly improving technological landscape of the 21st century, it can be hard for a student newspaper to keep up with the times. LHS journalism teachers reached out to LEF for a helping hand.

Thanks to your support, LEF was able to provide the funds needed for the LHS journalism department to purchase Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 sports lenses, which were put to use by the Farmers’ Harvest newspaper staff.

“The lenses have been excellent for us to use to capture good sports photographs,” LHS Newspaper Adviser Elizabeth Boyle told LEF. “The quality photos have an impact on traffic to our website.”

Students were first trained on the use of the lenses, which included reinforcement of the fundamentals of photography such as exposure, aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

With training complete, students put the lenses to use during football season. The ease of use quickly made these lenses the go-to lenses for sports and low-light photography.

The Farmers’ Harvest staff photographers were the primary users of the lenses, but photojournalism students with compatible cameras were allowed to use lenses under supervision during school field trips.

“The Sigma lenses came into great use for our football season,” Farmers’ Harvest Photo Editor and LHS Senior Elizabeth Wegener said. “I could be standing in one end zone and get a good shot of the complete other side of the field. It makes it easier to zoom in and out so I don’t have to switch lenses.

“For our softball season, it was really good too because I could get a clear shot from where I was standing behind home into the outfield.” LHS student athletes have seen great success lately, and having the ability to capture those great moments adds to the excitement of what student photographers do.

Strong fundamentals and great technology combined for a photography win – LHS student photographers collected 10 state and regional awards for their work! Awards are judged on overall excellence, and visual communication is a major component. The Farmers’ Harvest newspaper staff was a finalist for Best Website from the Dallas Morning News, honorable mention Best of Show at the TAJE Fall Fiesta, winner of the ILPC Award of Distinguished Merit and the Bronze Star, and a recipient of Superior Rating in coverage in the TAJE Clips Contest.

LHS expanded their newspaper photography staff and students are excited each time they get to use the new lenses. The journalism teachers are confident this LEF grant will continue to reap benefits in the future for future students.

Remember when you were a kid, how great it felt to win an award? Your generosity made it possible for journalism students to experience that feeling. And their use of the tools you provided allows them to capture the moments when student athletes have success — that’s win, win, win!
