Gary Cox knew at a young age he wanted to be a Physical Education teacher and committed his life to that goal and profession which lasted 43 years. After a 20-year career in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he spent the last 23 years teaching at Lewisville ISD’s B. B. Owen Elementary in The Colony where he greeted children and colleagues each morning with a smile, a high five, and encouragement to make the most of every single day. He dedicated himself to ensuring the elementary students were physically fit and well-prepared for middle and high school athletics.
In the 43 years Gary taught, he received many awards for his work in education, including the 1990 OAHPERD Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award, and he was the 1998-1999 LISD Teacher of the Year Finalist. Gary spent much of his own personal time leading clubs that gave children an opportunity to better their skills, to learn how to be a team member, and to have fun. Clubs he founded at B.B. Owen include the Owen Sprinters, Boogie Cats, and Bobcat Ropers. In addition, he used every opportunity to share his faith and build character traits they could take with them for a lifetime.
Coach Cox loved children and loved living in The Colony where he could continue to cultivate relationships with former students and parents. For that reason, his family knew his heart would want to help as many students possible achieve their educational goals through the creation of this memorial scholarship, the Coach Gary Cox Legacy Memorial Scholarship.
